About This Special Issue
Livestock farming has long been a cornerstone of global agriculture, providing a vital source of food, livelihoods, and economic stability to communities across the world. However, the sustainability of livestock systems faces unprecedented challenges, including population growth, resource constraints, climate change, and evolving consumer demands. In response to these challenges, the special issue on "Advances in Animal Genetics to Support Sustainable Livestock Systems" aims to explore the latest breakthroughs in animal genetics and their potential to reshape the future of livestock farming.
This special issue is significant due to its emphasis on the pivotal role of animal genetics in tackling pressing concerns within the livestock industry. With a growing global population and increasing demand for animal products, there is added pressure on natural resources and the environment. Additionally, heightened awareness regarding animal welfare, health, and ethical treatment has come to the forefront. Therefore, this special issue focuses on showcasing cutting-edge developments in animal genetics that can facilitate a sustainable and ethical approach to livestock production.
The primary objectives of this special issue are as follows
(1)Highlighting Genetic Innovations: These may include genomic selection, gene editing, and advanced breeding techniques designed to improve animal productivity and health.
(2)Sustainability in Breeding Objectives: Explore the identification and prioritization of genetic traits that align with sustainability goals. Such traits may encompass disease resistance, feed efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and adaptability to changing environmental conditions.
(3)Animal Welfare Investigate how advances in animal genetics can contribute to improved animal welfare standards within the livestock industry. This involves genetic selection for traits related to health, behavior, and well-being.
(4)Environmental Sustainability: Research on genetic strategies that reduce the environmental footprint of livestock farming, including reduced resource consumption and waste production, will be a key focus.
We invite the submission of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, case studies, and opinion pieces that contribute to the understanding and advancement of animal genetics in the context of sustainable livestock systems. Interdisciplinary research, involving geneticists, animal scientists, environmentalists, and policy experts, is highly encouraged. We also welcome articles that discuss the challenges and opportunities in translating genetic research findings into practical applications within the livestock industry.
Through this special issue, we aim we hope to contribute to the global effort to ensure the long-term viability of livestock production, safeguard animal welfare. We welcome researchers from various disciplines to provide interdisciplinary perspectives on Advances in breeding and genetics to support sustainable livestock systems. Your contributions will play a crucial role in advancing knowledge in this field.
