About This Special Issue
Today HIV and AIDS is a challenge that has affected a lot of individuals and communities in different parts of the world. A lot of effort has been executed in ensuring that this scourge is reversed and that people affected are accorded decent lives. Consequently, many interventions and strategies have been developed and implemented with a view to reducing the effects of HIV/AIDS. Some of the interventions have promising results and others have failed to live up to their expectations. Thus the problems of people affected by HIV and AIDS is troubling and continues to require ongoing attention. A number of socio-economic factors have been implicated for the current impacts of HIV/AIDS. Unless these are addressed effectively there might be a growing number of HIV affected people who will continue to daily face a plethora of socio-economic and psychosocial challenges because of being associated with HIV/AIDS. At the same time there seems to be an absence of solid socio-political and economic will at various levels of governance to support this burgeoning problem. It is critical to discover new and pragmatic ways of addressing the challenges of people who are HIV impacted. Coupled with this should be deliberate attention that needs to be paid to troubling factors which include psychosocial and emotional challenges, stigma, and depression all of which worsen the welfare and lives of communities and individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS. These factors are dangerous as they can exert a negative impact on the overall well-being of impacted communities and individuals. In light of this important implications for policy development, programming, and practice are needed. This may involve paying attention to promising efforts and interventions that could create more awareness around the challenges of HIVAIDS. These solutions may also create opportunities for designing tailor made programs that target specific needs of HIV affected people and communities. This special journal focuses on those promising approaches, interventions and practices.
