Membrane technology provides a promising solution in separation processes such as water and wastewater treatment. The bottleneck of the membrane technology is the fouling of the membrane that shortens the membrane lifetime and increases the operation cost. Membrane fouling is also associated with increased operation and maintenance cost.
Among all membrane-based treatment systems, algal related technologies that mainly referred to as membrane bioreactors piqued many interests. The products of the membrane bioreactor and membrane photobioreactors, named biomass, are a source of various products, such as cosmetics, pigments, and biofuels.
For this special issue on the recent advances on membrane fouling mitigation techniques, such as membrane enhancement, operational control, and design enhancement that could overcome the fouling of the bioreactors and photobioreactors are welcome. The aim is to publish research works that contribute to progressing the knowledge of membrane fouling in bioreactors that are in center of attentions as a favorable treatment technology.
