A Re-Examination of the Effect of Financial Integration on Financial Development in Sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: This paper aims to analyse the relationship between financial integration and financial development in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). To achieve this objective, we use a methodological approach based on panel data over the period 2000-2021 in 39 SSA countries. By estimating the panel threshold regression dynamic model (PTR Dynamic model) and using the Generalised method of moments (GMM), we show that there is a significant non-linear relationship between financial integration and financial development. This non-linear relationship refines existing evidence between financial integration and financial development. The optimal threshold of financial integration, defined as the level of financial integration that maximises financial development, is 69%. Therefore, the optimal level of financial integration is robust to sensitivity analysis, resulting in thresholds between 67% and 70%. The results show that financial integration has a differentiated effect on financial development depending on its sign. More specifically, below 69%, financial integration has a positive and significant effect on financial development; but above this 69% threshold, financial integration has a negative and significant effect on financial development. The public and monetary authorities must therefore take prudential measures into account in order to maintain the development of the financial system.

Abstract: This research aims to evaluate the performance of accountants currently working remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic and identify the factors that might influence their productivity. Although companies have been aware of the benefits of technology, they have not fully utilized it to optimize their operations until the pandemic hit in 2020. While previous studies have examined the impact of remote work in different regions, there is limited research on the accountancy industry in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to enhance our scientific understanding of this phenomenon. The research collected data from 186 accountants through a Google form using SEM-PLS and SmartPLS 4.0. The study also presents a model that demonstrates the connection between these competencies, their perceived significance, and productivity. Interestingly, the research discovered no significant correlation between accountants’ technological and technical skills and online productivity. However, the study revealed that soft-skill accountants tend to be more productive. This finding underscores the importance of cultivating soft skills and technical and technological expertise in accounting. The study also found that 43% of the participants believed working from home would improve their productivity. These results suggest that companies should adopt a more flexible and remote work arrangement rather than adhere to a traditional office-based work culture. This research provides valuable insights into how the accounting industry can adapt and thrive in a remote work environment, given the unique circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract: In this study the authors aimed to analyze to what extent the existence of business incubators are perceived as a positive factor for the university environment and how beneficial it is to the growth of students' entrepreneurial skills as perceived by teachers. Likewise, the authors aimed to analyze the academic environment from different faculties and their predisposition towards new areas of knowledge in the economic field, especially in entrepreneurship. Business incubators represent an entrepreneurial initiation platform for students, but also a possibility of applying theoretical knowledge in local entrepreneurial practice. The connection between the academic environment, the economic environment and the public authorities needs to be made aware precisely for a revitalization, motivation, support of young entrepreneurs capable of starting businesses from the period of their university studies. The development of entrepreneurial skills will allow the identification of ideas focused on business by carrying out activities with the help of mentors from university business incubators. In this case the role of mentors (volunteers) would be Teaching Staff which can be included as an element in the support system for future entrepreneurs. The potential of university teachers and students from the university environment allows business incubators to be supported with the range of available services offering a support platform in the development of entrepreneurship.

Spatio-Temporal Evolution of the Coupled Coordination of the Digital Economy and the High-Quality Development of the Retail Industry

Abstract: Based on the available panel data on the digital economy and the high-quality development of the retail industry in 31 provinces in China from 2014 to 2021, we use the entropy weight method, the coupling coordination degree model, the relative development degree model, and the spatial auto-correlation model to analyze the coupling coordination development levels of the digital economy and the retail industry. The results show that the level of development of the digital economy and the retail industry, as well as the degree of coupling and coordination of the development of the digital economy and the retail industry in China, shows a rising trend year by year, but there is significant regional heterogeneity. The development of China's digital economy and retail industry is unbalanced, with the development level of the digital economy lagging behind that of the retail industry in most provinces. The spatial auto-correlation results show that there are strong spatial clustering and spatial correlation characteristics in the coupled and coordinated development of China's digital economy and retail industry, and the spatial linkage pattern is more pronounced in the eastern region. Based on the above conclusions, we propose recommendations for digitally-enabled high-quality development of the retail industry.

Abstract: Accurate prediction of traffic speed plays a key role in easing traffic congestion and improving road utilization efficiency. However, traditional traffic analysis methods often fail to capture complex traffic patterns. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, traffic prediction using machine learning models has become a focal point of research. This study aims to explore the application of machine learning models in traffic speed analysis and prediction, by constructing a multi-model fusion method through stacking-based ensemble. Initially, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Linear Regression (LR), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Support Vector Regression (SVR) were selected as base models to predict the traffic speed. Then, their predictive performance was improved by optimizing the model parameters through Bayesian optimization algorithm. After contrast experiments, LR was adopted as a meta-regressor to merge the predictive factors of the optimized base models into a stacking-based ensemble model, improving the performance of traffic speed prediction further. Finally, the proposed ensemble model was evaluated using multiple traffic datasets. The experimental validation demonstrates that the ensemble model achieves outstanding performance in predicting traffic speed. The findings of this study highlight the potential of machine learning models, particularly the stacking-based ensemble method, in predicting the traffic speed.

Abstract: With the continuous development of digital economy, the rapid rise of "fresh" retail formats in China, consumers' demand for fresh electricity business presents diversified and personalized characteristics, and fresh electricity business has become a field of wide attention. In this study, this paper discusses the business model and strategic management of Meituan Fresh in the digital economy based on statistical research and statistical measurement tools. Through interviews and questionnaires, Meituan Selection focuses on establishing an efficient and transparent supply chain and provides a variety of products through cooperation with multiple fresh brands. Meanwhile, Meituan Fresh actively cooperates with offline stores to provide faster distribution and better service. Compared with other e-commerce platforms, Meituan Selection better performance in fresh product quality, delivery speed and user experience; flexible and diversified service and management strategies in market expansion, and unique advantages in core links such as supply chain and distribution services. In terms of consumer awareness and brand awareness, Meituan Fresh still has room for further improvement. In the investigation and multi-case comparison, it reveals the preferred business model and strategic management of Meituan in the digital economy, and explores how to reduce the purchase cost of consumers on the premise of ensuring fresh quality and service quality, so that consumers can buy and eat safely.

Abstract: Corporate Governance has recently become an important issue in Bangladesh. The principal characteristics of effective corporate governance are protection of rights and privileges of minority shareholders and transparency of companies. The Companies Act of 1994, which was passed with the protection of minority shareholders as one of its key objectives, has fallen short of providing minorities with the security and remedy they were expecting against oppression. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the rights and privileges of minority shareholders in the family-owned firms on the perception of three major stakeholders of the sample companies. For this purpose, the study has developed a questionnaire based on recent literature survey and gathered the opinions of the executive/non-executive directors, Independent directors and shareholders of sample companies under the framework of 5 point likert scale. The gathered primary data have been analyzed by appropriate number of descriptive and inferential statistics. In examining the state of minority shareholders’ rights and privileges in the sample listed firms, the study takes the perception of the executive/non-executive directors, the independent directors, and the shareholders and finds that they have shown different views from each other, indicating that there are likely irregular/unmethodical practices of the board directors in this respect in the sample firms. In measuring the level of importance on different issues of corporate governance on listed family-owned firms of Bangladesh given by the respondents, the study observed that the groups have a significant difference on minority shareholders’ rights and privileges and an insignificant difference on cumulative voting rights. Finally, the study gives some recommendations for the remedies of minority shareholders.
