Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Nurses and Midwives Relating to the Symptoms Suggestive of Breast Cancer in Ouagadougou

Abstract: Paramedical professionals play an important role in the early diagnosis of breast cancer. We, therefore, conducted a study with the aim of evaluating the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses and midwives of the CSPS of Ouagadougou on the symptoms suggestive of breast cancer. This cross-sectional descriptive study took place in the CSPSs of the city of Ouagadougou health districts from September 03, 2020, to February 03, 2021. The study included 400 nurses and midwives working at the CSPSs of the city of Ouagadougou, present during the interviewers’ visit, and who had agreed to participate freely and voluntarily were included in the survey. The subjects were asked to give their opinion, according to a Likert scale, about certain assertions related to symptoms of breast cancer. What would they do in front of “strongly suggestive”, “suggestive”, “neither suggestive nor suggestive”, “non- suggestive” and “not at all suggestive” symptoms of breast cancer? In our sample, there were 217 (54.3%) nurses and 183 (45.7%) midwives. Their level of knowledge was insufficient in 24.5% of cases, average in 46.25% of cases, good in 22.25% of cases, and excellent in 7% of cases. Concerning their attitudes and practices in front of symptoms considered "strongly suggestive", "suggestive", "neither suggestive nor not suggestive", "not suggestive", and "not suggestive at all", the subjects surveyed claimed to refer to a higher level of care in 96.5%, 94%, 83.7%, 62.2% and 51.5% of cases respectively. These differences were significant. Twelve subjects never referred patients, regardless of their judgment on the suggestive or non- suggestive character of the symptoms. Their average knowledge score was 4.7 points out of 10, compared to 5.7 points out of 10 for those who referred according to their judgment (p = 0.03). Measures to train and retrain nurses and midwives should make it possible to raise their level of awareness concerning breast cancer in order to ensure promptness and adequacy in the management of suspected cases of breast cancer.

Abstract: Background: The introduction of ART had a momentous impact on women living with Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) with cervical cancer positive. The incidence of AIDS-defining cancers has decreased, but the risk is still higher than general population. Women living with (HIV) have a high prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and correlated disease, including cervical cancer. HIV-related risk factors, such as immunodeficiency and chronic persistence of infection play an important role in its pathogenesis. HPV vaccine, screening and early antiretroviral therapies, are recommended to reduce the risk of developing cervical cancer among the WLH. Methodology: In this review, we considered the studies published about cervical cancer in women living with HIV between 2019 to 2022 in Kenya. We comprised only recent articles written in English, identifying 50 records. We excluded 10 articles after reading title and abstract. At the end of the assessment we included in our review the 40 full-text articles. Results: The normal history of HIV infection has been intensely modified by the introduction of HAART, but HIV-infected women still have a higher risk of developing HPV-related diseases, including cervical cancer. Conclusion: Further studies are needed to obtain data about interactions between HAART and HPV-related lesions. Lastly, psychological support for cervical cancer survivors and management of late effects are needed.

Abstract: Laminin is a large molecular glycoprotein heterotrimer assembled from different α, β, and γ chains. In 1979, Non-collagen glycoprotein were isolated from basement membrane-rich tumors and cells that produce basement membranes and purified into laminin. The LAMA2 gene encodes the subunit of Laminin α2 and is located on chromosome 6q22-q33. Recently, new evidence has emerged that LAMA2 is involved in the biological processes of extracellular matrix (ECM) tissue and adhesions, and is related to inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), pituitary adenoma (PitNET), ovarian cancer (OC), Laryngopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (L/P-SCC) and many other diseases. In addition, the role of LAMA2 gene in mutation, differential expression and in terms of signal pathways in many cancers and other diseases, as well as promoter DNA methylation, all show the important regulatory role of LAMA2 in molecular biological mechanisms. The review briefly generalizes the progress in deciphering this unique molecule in recent years, including molecular structure of Lama2 gene, Lama2 gene regulation and DNA methylation, Lama2 and its protein binding partners, clinical relevance of Lama2, prospective application in diagnosis and potential therapeutic application of Lama2, and summarizes the new frontiers of Lama2 research and predicts the new prospects of Lama2 as a diagnostic and prognostic indicator of cancer and other diseases.
