Abstract: Since entering the era of information, people are realizing that meanings no longer exist only in language or words, but are also conveyed by non-verbal modalities like images, sound, color, and gesture. These non-verbal means of communication are increasingly significant and get into a broader utilization in public media communication, especially in publicity film or short video. This research, based mainly on Kress. G & Van Leeuwen’s Grammar of Visual Design and Zhang Delu’s Comprehensive Theoretical Framework of Multimodal Discourse Analysis, conducts a multimodal discourse analysis on the National Publicity Film of China—China Steps Into a New Era. After a synthesis analysis from both macroscopic and microcosmic angle of the transcription of the film, this thesis comes up to its conclusion that the publicity film mainly involves two kinds of modalities: visual sense and auditory sense. Visual sense includes light, image, color, body movement and facial expression; auditory sense falls into language, music and sound. These modalities are not only simple spreading out or superposition, but interact, mingle and supplement with one another, so as to reach emotional resonance. Consequently, the communicative purpose of the multimodal discourse is realized in this way.

Abstract: Academic writing is pertinent to postgraduate students because it is mandatory for them to write a research thesis as part of their degree programme. However, sometimes the theses that postgraduate students write do not communicate well or depict their professionalism. One of the problems these students face, as they write, is appropriate use of discourse markers. Discourse markers, when used appropriately, enhance coherence and signal the presence of particular relationships among text elements. They are also crucial tools for achieving communicative act in the text because they guide and influence the text receivers’ interpretation of the text. To evaluate how postgraduate students in Kenya use discourse markers in their writing, as speakers of English as a second language, this paper analyzed the discourse markers in the literature review section of all the PhD theses deposited at JOOUST library. If postgraduate students use Discourse markers effectively, especially in the literature review section of their theses, this could help guard against plagiarism because their voices as writers will be forcefully brought out. Basing on Fraser’s taxonomy the study identified different hierarchies of discourse markers though elaborative and inferential markers were the most frequent types. The study also suggested how some of the discourse markers identified could be used to bring out the writer’s voice so as to guard against plagiarism.

Abstract: One of the development agenda for Kenya is the achievement of universal healthcare. An assessment of the level at which this has been implemented reveals that Kenya is facing challenges in implementing this endeavor. Health professionals communicate with patients to build trust for more effective practice. Failure to communicate strains the relationship, leading to ineffective practice. One of the main obstacles that may lead to failure in communication is differences in language and culture between the doctor and the patient. Majority of the people that universal healthcare targets in Kenya speak indigenous languages as opposed to English and Kiswahili, languages that the healthcare providers speak. Effective communication occurs through a language that the communicants understand best. Health care providers, in Kenya, understand English and Kiswahili best, while their patients understand Kenyan indigenous languages best. So, what language should be used in universal healthcare endeavors? Should it be English, Kiswahili or Indigenous languages? This shows that one of the main challenges facing the implementation of effective healthcare system and intervention in Kenya could be the language of discussions. Using a descriptive design, this paper takes a critical look at the role of Kenya’s indigenous languages in achieving universal healthcare goals. It argues that the achievement of effective and sustainable universal healthcare in Kenya can only become possible through the use of indigenous languages as languages of discussions. And that the use of indigenous languages in universal healthcare endeavors in Kenya should not be seen as a challenge but as an opportunity.
