Abstract: The Constitution of Kenya 2010 offers young women key entry points for engagement in political processes through elective and appointive positions in national and county governments. However, their participation appears to be minimal, which in turn creates a gap in ensuring gender equality. Across the globe, socio-economic factors have been reported to influence participation of women in political processes. This study aimed at investigating the effects of socio-economic factors on participation of young women in political processes in Nyamira South Sub County. The study adopted modernization theory and mixed methods research design, with both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods utilized. The target population was 76,392 registered voters drawn from the Sub County. However, a total of 157 study participants were sampled to take part in the study. Data obtained in the study was analyzed using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25. Descriptive and inferential statistics was employed in analysis of quantitative data while content analysis and theme were used to analyze qualitative data. Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis was conducted to ascertain the statistical influence of financial resources on young women to their political participation. Socio-economic factors which include; age, gender, marital status, employment status, household head and size influences an individual’s participation in political processes in the Sub County. A significant positive correlation coefficient (r=.938; p<0.05) existed between financial resources and young women’s political participation. This implies that financial resources ultimately influence young women’s decision to participate in political processes. The study therefore recommends that more funding opportunities and specific policies on young women‘s participation in political processes should be implemented. This will promote gender equality by encouraging more women to participate in political processes.

Abstract: On religious and ethnic identity clashes lay the structure of the Nigerian state in 1914, which transmogrified into and characterises the struggle for control of power and distribution of national resources. The dominant religious identities consist of Christianity and Moslem, while dominant ethnic identities are Hausa/Fulani, Igbo, and Yoruba. These pristine forces are entangled in phobic struggle for control of power and the distribution of national resources particularly since 1999, which has led to different policy interventions in search of solution. These coincided with the emergence of different ethno-religious conflicts in Nigeria. Thus, this paper explores the character and manifestation of these conflicts since 1999. It seeks to find out if: ethno-religious struggles led to the emergence of major conflicts in Nigeria since 1999; their impact on human insecurity; and the influence of politics on the conflicts. This inquiry is designed in-line with One-shot case study, while literature survey and expost facto methods were adopted as methods of data gathering. Trend analysis is adopted for data analysis. Analysis reveals that ethno-religious struggles were the primary progenitor of conflicts in Nigeria since 1999; and has debilitating consequences while politics exacerbated ethno-religious conflicts. Upholding Nigeria’s circular state and implementing the National Political Reforms Conference Report are the panacea for ethno-religious conflict in Nigeria.

Female Erotic Men and Male Ascetic Women: Goddess Yellamma and Her Agents / Victims

Abstract: This article is a study of the cult of the Goddess Yellamma and women/men/eunuchs called devadasis who derive a sense of agency through their worship of the mother Goddess. I have conducted a participant observation of the devadasis in and around Kolhapur; this work is an indepth study of their lives and their struggles. The word devadasi, as defined by the Encarta dictionary means a Hindu temple dancer, a member of a hereditary class of women dancers in a Hindu temple. In Kolhapur today, it is a very well known fact that a majority of these devadasis are Dalit women. Sheer poverty and destitution force them to accept this lifestyle, which inevitably culminates in the oldest profession of the world – prostitution. Society and culture has worked hand in hand to ensure that these devadasis are degraded to a dreaded existence and gradually they succumb to the dictates of religion and patriarchy. Rather for a devadasi, existence as a woman is secondary to her existence as a devadasi. She is first a devadasi, only then is she a woman. This is the manner in which, her denigration is complete. My interviews at Saundatti and Kolhapur (with its temple complexes) have revealed interesting conclusions about the system of dedication. The devadasi system is one that is still persisting, despite all kinds of prohibitions on the practice. It is an evil nexus of priests, administration and the local people. Inspite of all this exploitation in various aspects of their lives, they are not losing hope. Devadasis are agents of the Goddess -this gives them a social prestige. The agency of women in “religious prostitution” can be articulated - the fact that the Goddess to whom they are dedicated blesses them and communicates her wishes through them has endowed them with a huge sense of authority in their everyday lives. Human agency being that inherent capacity in each person to think, make choices and act, within and based on the socio-economic, political and cultural forces around them, in order to improve themselves and their families and communities; the devadasis are showing a great deal of agency in making visible efforts to improve their lives. In Kolhapur today, they are realising that their children shouldn’t be subjected to this degradation anymore and while possible, trying to make choices, acting within and trying to mould the socio-economic, political and cultural forces around them.

Abstract: The philosophy of ‘karma’ is a doctrine to consider being the foundation stone of the entire Indian Philosophical outlook. The Bhagavad Gita is most beloved scripture of Indian thought and one of the prime chapters of this scripture is the ‘law of karma’. According to it, every man profit from what he does and suffers from what he does. Karmayoga is mainly based on niskam-karma but not the mere renunciation of Karma. We have to give up the attachment and the fruit regarding the action. So, the action is our Svadharma, fruit or result is not our concern. The Gita said that the nature of Karma was natural, inherent in man’s existence and everybody has to work. Hence an attempt is made here to discuss the law of karma as considered by the Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavad-Gita has played an important role for guiding modern man in the performance of day-to- day duties. That involvement with the world is expressed by the term lokasamgraha. The term covers amplitude of social and spiritual forms of behavior and attitudes of mind. Some great thinkers, religious and political leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Aurobindo Ghosh, Balgangadhar Tilak, Swami Vivekananda and so many great men have greatly influenced by the ideal of karma yoga. In this present word, I used a method which is critical and comparative. The concept of Karmayoga of Bhagavad Gita is critically examined. Here an attempt is made here to discuss the law of karma as considered by the Bhagavad Gita comparatively with contemporary Indian thinkers.
