Abstract: There is growing concern that over recent decades CEOs tend to earn overwhelmingly more than the average worker. This throws the researchers to question the economic benefit of paying CEOs huge amount of money while we have discouraged workers who may become less productive and therefore lowering the firm profitability. Researchers have taken positions on both sides of the debate over whether the level of CEO’s pay is economically justified or is the result of managerial power. This study sought to establish the extent of power that CEO’s possess among Kenya firms listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange. CEO’s power was measured in terms of structural power, ownership power, CEO tenure and Board composition. The study used secondary data. Data was collected from 60 firms listed at the NSE. Using a cross sectional design, a regression model was fitted to show the relationship between CEO’s power and CEO’s compensation. Descriptive and inferential results were obtained. The findings revealed that in the Kenyan context CEO’s power does not significantly influence CEO’s compensation. CEO’s pay is market-determined and reflects the bidding by firms for scarce executive talent. The increase in CEO’s pay is due to the rise in incentive compensation that links pay to firm performance and aligns the incentives of managers with those of shareholders.

Abstract: The Ministry of Defence (MOD) would like to see Indian Ordnance Factories, also known as Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) grow to the next level of turnover, exports and self-reliance through Corporatisation, a reform that holds the promise of catapulting OFB into the top League of Defence Manufacturers. The Government has formed an Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) under the Chairmanship of Raksha Mantri (Defence Minister) to oversee and guide the entire process. This paper examines various aspects of the transformation process and widens the agenda of the debate for successful change management. This paper examines the difference between the Goals, Tools and Values to bring clarity for Strategic Transformation. The paper raises hope that although the statistics of history and research is stacked against Organisational Transformation, it is well possible to drive Transformation and make the turnaround of the organisation with an open-ended exercise, an honest intention centred on the alignment of interest amongst the stakeholders. The paper argues that transformation strategy can work better with focus on the following levers; Strategic Transformation, EcoSystem Transformation, Learning from Past and Best of Class from Industry, Unit and Corporate Level Transformation, Structural Changes from Financial Perspective, Empowerment Mechanism, Talent Management and Employee Concerns and Better Change Management through monitoring of the Consultant.

Previous studies on organizational communication and employee performance have mostly been undertaken within the context of the private sector, with very few studies focused on the public sector. Hence, the focus of this paper on the exploration of how vertical communication impacts on employee performance, especially considering the moderating role of organizational culture on this relationship. The study adopted the cross-sectional survey as the design for the study and utilized the questionnaire as the primary data collection tool. A total of 461 participants were involved in the study as sourced from the Rivers State Civil Service Commission. Three hypotheses were tested, assessing the relationship between vertical communication and two stated measures of employee performance, namely – employee effectiveness and efficiency (bivariate); and also, that which assessed the moderating role of organizational culture on the relationship between vertical communication and employee performance. The findings showed that vertical communication significantly contributes towards employee performance as evidenced by outcomes such as employee effectiveness and efficiency. There is also evidence that organizational culture significantly moderates the relationship between vertical communication and employee performance. In conclusion, this study affirms that the vertical flow of communication across the organization drives the performance of employees, though this is highly dependent on the culture of the organization.
