Historical and Literatural Value of Hoang Dinh Ai’s Theological Epitaph in Vietnam

Abstract: The article raises the orgin of the holy epitaph which is the foundation searching for relevant materials to check evidence and compare the accuracy of the documents. Through the content of the epitaphs, the author presents some of comments on the structural form of the text, the method of using literature dispostion on the epitaph; together with clarifying the conflict between the composer and the history written by the Imperial court, also the discrepancy in dates recorded in the name and tile of the epitaph. Additionally, the writing details the documentary values on literature and historical research, especially studying the family background, the marriage and lifetime merits of Thái Tể (Glorious Grand Duke) Hoang Dinh Ai, a meritorious official under the reign of Le Trung Hung with historic events relating to the conflict between Le Dynasty and Mac Dynasty in the 16th century in Vietnam. All the contents of the epitaph is introduced at the end of the text.

Abstract: Mankind who has been looking forward finding back his Lost Paradise, has defined his life into an endless quest. A quest which has given ground to a topic of reflection among many African writers such as Fatou Diome, who in The Belly of the Atlantic, brings on surface the different aspects of African emigration in European countries. Thus, in this article, we drive, on the one hand, at exposing the misleading and impaired hope that attracts and motivates African young people to run away from their “miserable lives” to cross the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans and, on the other hand, at highlighting the local solutions that do exist to stop such a social and topical phenomenon.

An Interpretation of Female Images in One Hundred Years of Solitude

Abstract: One Hundred Years of Solitude is a masterpiece of Gabriel García Márquez, which tells the history of the Buendía family. There are all together eleven female images in this novel, all of whom play important roles in the rise and decline of this great family. This paper tries to interpret three representative female images in this novel who have decisive impacts on the destiny of this family, namely Úrsula Iguarán, Fernanda, and Amaranta Úrsula. Úrsula Iguarán is an image eliminating gender binary opposition, and Fernanda is an image that has no say in a patriarchal society, while Amaranta Úrsula represents the awakening of self-awareness of females who decide to fight against patriarchy. These three females represent different stages of social development, and show that only when females become confident and independent, awaken their self-awareness, and dare to fight against patriarchal oppression, can their subjectivity be fully achieved. Their destiny also reflects García Márquez’s confusion about women’s position in a patriarchal society, that is, although he calls for gender equality, men still have the dominant power.

A Sociolinguistic Approach to the Persian Native Speakers’ Strategies for Expressing Sorrow and Happiness: A Comparison of the Gender Differences

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the strategies adopted by Persian native speakers for expressing their happiness and sorrow. For this purpose, the researcher spent one month observing the behavior of different male and female native speakers of Farsi who were of different ages between 12-68. The researcher collected the data either by participating different events of happiness and sorrow or putting the audience under one of these circumstances by giving them some good or bad news in order to audit their way of expressing happiness and sorrow. The responses collected were extracted as 8 happiness expression strategies (surprise, positive adjectives, appreciation, thanking God, expressing emotions and statements and informal emotional expression) and 6 sorrow-expression strategies (expressing pity, questions, statements, curse words and threatening). Among these strategies, statement was common in both happiness and sorrow strategies. After identifying the strategies, the number and percentage of each strategy was calculated for male and female participants. The results indicated that surprise, thanking God, statements and appreciation are the most frequent happiness strategies among male participants and expressing emotions and surprise are the most frequently-used happiness strategies among female ones. One important point in the strategy of "expressing emotion" is that it is a female-specific strategy not used by male population at all. On the other hand, regarding expressions of sorrow, according to the findings of this research, expressing pity is the most frequent strategy both for males and females. In expressing sorrow, using curse words is the second rank for male participants and other strategies are somehow equally-used among both groups as the difference between the frequencies of male and female was not that considerable.
