Abstract: In the article we mainly discussed how to adopt graphical method to show the influence of particle size on the mechanical properties of mixed soils. Based on the extensive experimental data, using triangle graphics, as well as software Matlab, we could describe and model the change of the mechanical properties of mixed soils. Through this method, we can create the soil with the needed requirements, and this will be very helpful in construction.

Abstract: Determining a good price in competitive bidding is a common problem for the construction company. An offer price could be too high for contractors hoping to get a big profit with no risk to get the project, or too low in the hope of getting a lot of projects but at the risk of losing opportunity to get benefits and risks of failure in carrying out the work.Friedman model was selected for bidding strategy purpose. The model was applied to a number of data offering price of contractors bidding for the construction of buildings in the city Banjarbaru starting in 2012-2015, which has Owners’s estimate with a range between IDR 248 million to IDR 4.8 billion. Then the test data results with the data that has been set aside for testing the model.Friedman bidding strategy models produced Mark-Up valued at -9% for multi normal distributions and -5% for a single normal distribution. Mark-Up is validated on the winning bidder of IDR 478,590.00. The tests produced the offering price of IDR 478,560,210.00 (with Mark Up -8.84%) and IDR 498,726,250.00 (with Mark Up -5%). So Friedman models with Multi Normal Distribution can beat the lowest bid.

Abstract: Construction delays are occurring in every phase of a construction project and are common problems in construction projects in Ethiopia. Moreover, it is well known that the delays in construction projects are the major causes of project failure. If the delay is not identified and the corrective project management decision is not taken in time a project may incur extra cost and extension of project time, which gives rise to dissatisfaction to all the parties involved and nowadays it’s becoming a major obstruction for their development for developing countries like Ethiopia. This research first identified 88 key factors causing delay in Ethiopian construction industries, and then the most common and critical causes of construction delay were evaluated by using both the data collected in a survey of construction managers, resident engineers, contractors, and clients, and interviews with senior professionals in the field. The findings show that the main critical factors that cause construction delays in Ethiopia are: (1) Difficulties in financing project by a contractor; (2) Escalation of the materials price; (3) Infective project planning; (4) Scheduling or resource management; (5) Delay in progress payments for completed works, (6) Lack of skilled professionals in the field of construction management in the organization, and (7) Fluctuating labor availability season to season /Seasonal labors availability. This study shows that in Ethiopia only 8.25% projects have been finished to the original targeted completion date. The remaining 91.75% delayed 352% of its contractual time. This paper finally came up with solutions towards reducing the impact of delays on construction projects in Ethiopia.

Abstract: In urban environments, or in the areas where storms are frequent and violent, it is advisable to temporarily store rainfall in balancing reservoir before slackening them with flow controlled in the sewer system or in the natural environment, which limits the risks of flood and the environmental impact. The dimension of these reservoirs can be sizeable and their establishment on saturated site may be complicated and expensive. The solution suggested in this study is to distribute the retention on several reservoirs connected to each other by pipes and controlled by nozzles, and to exploit their respective capacity and the conditions of transfer to optimize the downstream flow in the network or in the natural environment. A numerical model named tank type was developed, which represents with a good level of precision the heights in the reservoirs and the flows transferred according to time as well as intensity and duration of the rain. This simplified model incremented according to a step of time adjusted with the intensity of the rain works in volumes and flow. The hydraulic conditions of flow are not considered. The model is validated by several studies of sensitivity on meshes or series of 2 or 3 reservoirs and opens up the way for a fast and reliable tool of pre dimensioning.

Abstract: This research investigates the feasibility of web technology as a means of delivering facility information services for better support facility operation and maintenance. Our research proposes a web-based service request and feedback system as a pragmatic solution to the limitations of current facility management (FM) processes with a case study of university residential complex. In practice, work orders and records are often misplaced resulting in lower efficiency and customer satisfaction. Information technology (IT) could be an important tool for reaching efficiency and effectiveness within operation and maintenance, provided that correct and relevant IT is applied. In this study, a model for stating information digitally with a web-based interface and identifying facility services management IT requirements is developed. For customer satisfaction, the end-user point-and-click graphical interface could allow residents to report facility problems using a problem fixture on a floor plan image, trace their work order in progress, view schedules for maintenance, and provide feedback for service online. The benefit for a FM department is that it can receive feedback on performance which would improve the quality of service and build a record of practical experiences. Moreover, this paper enhances the use of a structural practice for the identification of IT requirements which is essential in the pursuit of quality FM services for realization of sustainable buildings in the long run.
