Abstract: Chinese brush calligraphy has not only aesthetic value, but it is also fully loaded with semiological signification of Chinese qi philosophy. Adopting Roland Barthes’s theory on signs, this paper aims to discuss signification of qi in Chinese calligraphy. In addition, drawing on the Saussurean dichotomy of langue and parole as well as Barthes’s contention about signification and metalanguage, I argue that in the underlying langue of Chinese culture exists the philosophy of qi as a whole, whereas calligraphy is one of the genres for qi to be manifested and signified.

Abstract: Each of the phenomena is perceived by human in certain specific ways from perception to cognition. The next step is the convert of cognitive information into language codes so that these information can be released to the object of communication, the receiver or the listener. Then, the listener receives codes and decodes them in order to understand the information from which he can perform a reverse process. That communication process must have its rules. To communicate successfully, to have mutual-understanding between objects of communication, we need to have a system of cognitive logic rules. Therefore, in this research paper, the author uses the cognitive linguistics analysis approach to investigate the interesting cognitive logic points of the basic perception verbs both in English (look, see, listen, hear, smell, taste and touch) and in Vietnames (nhìn, nghe, ngửi, nếm, sờ and thấy). For research data, the author inspected and collected 3,946 sentences with perception verbs from two sets of English-Vietnamese, Vietnamese-English bilingual novels: The adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Love after war. As a result, what the author has achieved for this research question are how to understand negative cognitive meanings, how to interpret the true-false value of utterances with perception verbs, and some interesting cognitive logic rules we must apply in order to get the exact cognition of the utterances containing perception verbs.

Abstract: The Mayor of Casterbridge is one of Thomas Hardy’s typical ‘Wessex novels’. This novel narrates a series of stories that happened after Henchard sold his wife when he was drunk at early 19 century England, Casterbridge. Combining with other Wessex novels we can summarize that Hardy believed that human fate was closely linked with character, it is “the novel of character and fate”. In traditional literature, a tragic hero is utterly vicious, but in The Mayor of Casterbridge, Michael Henchard is not the typical tragic man, he is a tragic hero. He was impulsive, arrogant and honest, ambitious at the same time. So the moral value supported his control over his wife, daughter and lover. By analyzing Henchard’ s defective character, we can safely come to the conclusion that Henchard is mainly responsible for his own tragedy which is inevitable for his own defective personalities. Apart from Henchard, Susan and Elisabeth are the female roles in the story who also have different fates because of their unique characters. For living environment, they were living in the same society when people have prejudices against women. For character, they were completly different. Compared with traditional woman, Susan, the mother, Hardy created a new model of female, Elisabeth, the daughter, who desired for freedom and explored for self-improvement. For their fates, Hardy believed that there was a kind of mysterious and unavoidable power that can change people’s life, and their different fates are the result of their different personalities. Susan as a tragic great mother, died miserably, and Elisabeth as an independent daughter, gained liberation and lived happily. This paper observes the human being from these two angles, the character and the fate, to deeply and systematically analyze the close relationship between fate and character in The Mayor of Casterbridge.

Abstract: Marking is a universal linguistic phenomenon. Marking is the giving of a marker either free or bound, either in front or back on a morphological form. The Dialect of Lamalera (DL) is one of 35 dialects in the Lamaholot Language family. The Lamalera dialect has apronominal marker attached either to the front in a number of certain categories of words or back in other categories. Interestingly, the DL is almost entirely in all categories of words. Provision of markers on anumber of categories triggers conformity to the word category often referred to as agreement verbs, personal clitics, subject markers, personal (prefixes, suffixes), agreement markers, or subject verb agreements. This paper will only examine the alignment in the DL with out comparing it with dialect or other languages cross language.
