A Study on Conversational Strategies of Chinese Country Doctors with Their Patients from the Perspective of Social Psychological Pragmatics

Abstract: Conversational strategies are the techniques that help speakers to maintain conversations going smoothly and to achieve the communicative goals. Via adopting the method of fieldwork and empirical research to collect authentic country doctor-patient conversations and making qualitative analysis with basic quantitative analysis as supplement, this study probed into the conversational strategies implemented by Chinese country doctors in communicating with their patients and furthermore, explored the social psychological functions and effects of each conversational strategy. Via collecting and analyzing 217 conversations between 10 Chinese country doctors aged from 35 to 45 with 217 patients, the author found that 12 conversational strategies were employed by Chinese country doctors to help their patients be more cooperative in the process of diagnosis and more positive and active to the treatment, which were greeting, enquiry, instruction in diagnosis, data display, assertion, instruction after diagnosis, explanation, comparison, comforting, praise, warning, and kinship address. Moreover, instruction in diagnosis consists of two kinds which are direct instruction and instruction with request. Instruction after diagnosis consists of three types which are simple instruction, instruction with negation, and instruction with consultation. Explanation consists of four different ways which are explanation with medical knowledge, explanation with government policy, explanation with patient’s behavior, and explanation with slang. Comparison consists of two parts which are vertical comparison and horizontal comparison, and horizontal comparison is further divided into two kinds which are upward comparison and downward comparison. Additionally, different conversational strategies observed or violated different maxims of politeness principle and thus, caused different topical and social psychological functions and effects on patients and thus, help them be more cooperative and positive.

Political Turmoil Influencing Bilingual Education in the 1980s

Abstract: It is not uncommon to meet young Latinx adults who were raised in Spanish-speaking households but who received all-English elementary instruction, which deprived them from further developing their Spanish language proficiency. A large part of this population is a product of our educational system from the 1990s. This archival research delves into the 1980s to uncover our bilingual education history where strong sentiments were publicized and politicized affecting the youth of that time without them even knowing it. Also included, are reflective words from a 1980s New York Times author who spoke against bilingual education then and who agreed to an interview in early 2020. From un-American claims to a need for research, the findings reveal arguments made against bilingual education in the 1980s that are strikingly similar to those that exist today. These are the views that would continue to influence, and many times threaten, bilingual education for years to come. And in one way or another, forty years later, they continue to impact our classrooms today. Bilingual educators and advocates need to be aware of bilingual education history to ensure that the current youth has a more positive experience than what was experienced by others in the past.

Abstract: Writing is regarded as a huge challenge for students who study English as a foreign language (EFL). Confronted with the poor writing performance of Chinese students, researchers have been exploring the effective approaches to teaching EFL writing. "Talk for writing" is a widely studied field in countries such as the UK and New Zealand. However, reliable literature in this domain is scarce in China, and most of of it is short-term or unstructured research. Thus, this article aims to explore how (EFL) writing development and language learner identity are affected by talk, a process derived from social constructivism, entailing expounding, exchange, negotiation, reflection, and development. The 18-week longitudinal study applied a "talk for writing" approach to college English writing classes with 74 English-major students from a higher vocational college. This research, employing both quantitative methods and qualitative methods, yielded rich and dynamic results. (1) The quantitative data indicated that the "talk for writing" approach improved students' academic writing attainment on the whole. Particularly, the cohort of so-called "modest writers" benefited the most from it. Moreover, this approach, to a large extent, exerted a positive impact on the reconstruction of students' language learner identity. (2) The qualitative data identified the types of talk that supported writing and provided evidence for the ways in which talk supported students' ability to generate ideas, to use talk as oral rehearsal in preparation for writing, and to improve their linguistic accuracy. It also gave insights into students' views on this approach. Also, this approach developed students' engagement, motivation and confidence in English writing and delineated the negotiating trajectories of students' language learner identity.

A Study on the English Translation and Introduction of YU Hua's Novels from the Perspective of Medio-Translatology

Abstract: In the past 20 years, Yu Hua's novels have been systematically translated and introduced to English-speaking countries by Random House, and Yu Hua has also moved from Jiaxing to the world, becoming one of the successful writers in contemporary China. Understanding and analyzing the spread of the English translations of his novels in the English-speaking world is helpful to understand Yu Hua's literary influence in the world. Medio-Translatology is the study of translation in literary communication in comparative literature, which provides a research perspective for the research of the translation of Yu Hua's works. From the perspective of Medio-Translatology, this paper discusses the translation and dissemination of Yu Hua's novels in the English world by sorting out and analyzing the English versions of Yu Hua's novels, in order to explore the factors for the success of English translation of his works. The research holds that the successful translation and introduction of Yu Hua's novels in the English world mainly lies in the excellent original works. The translator's "creative treason" in the process of translation, the "cultural responsibility" of excellent editors and the works' quality to meet the expectations of the target readers' "evaluation and acceptance" are also the other important factors for the successful translation, introduction and dissemination of works.
