Terms of Sensory Perception in English and Vietnamese Metaphorical Expressions of Love

Abstract: The terms of sensory perception metaphorically used to express love are rather diversified in English and Vietnamese poetry. All five senses are exploited for different purposes of love expression. They contribute to the variety in love and help it easier to understand. In the light of the conceptual metaphor theory, fifteen source domains for love are found underlying 1190 sensory perception expressions (549 English and 641 Vietnamese). All the conceptual metaphors and many of the metaphorical expressions are the same in the two languages. These resemblances may be explained by the universality of metaphor and of the conceptual organization of sensory perception in human brain. However, coming from two different cultures, these terms are not completely similar between English and Vietnamese.

Abstract: Following the discussions of Bodomo and Marfo’s (2002) morphophonological analysis of Akan and Dagaare noun class system using number marking: singular and plural within Lexical Phonology theoretical framework, the present study seeks to provide a broader analysis of Akan-Twi plurals based on Distributed Morphology theoretical framework provided by Halle and Marantz (1993, 1994). The core issue of this paper is to account for whether the attachment of the prefix a- and the suffix -foɔ on some stems in Akan is due to the spell-out of vocabulary item (VI) or due to other morphological operations such as fission. Moreover, the paper attempts to address the context in which the Vocabulary Item /a-/ applies.

Abstract: This paper aims at exploring the efficient strategies of movie-subtitle translation by analyzing the problems in the translating process in terms of linguistic and cultural obstructions. By evaluating the English-Chinese translated version of the film The Shawshank Redemption, a 1994 American drama released by the Time Warner Company, the author tries to show how relevance theory works in dealing with the problems in translation, namely cultural differences, word games, style and omission in translation. Relevance theory is powerful and efficient in overcoming linguistic, cultural and stylistic obstacles in translation process. It allows translators more freedom to recreate their own translation versions rather than being trapped in the “meaning and form” dilemma as (translation) is supposed to “render the meaning of a text into another language in the way that the author intended the text” (Newmark, 2001: 5). This is especially true in the movie subtitle translation due to its unique features as a text and the expectation from the audiences.

Abstract: The feudalistic culture in Japan reached its peak in Edo Era. Culture in this period gradually became improved and mature in the peaceful development of the society. The cultural subject changed from a few people in the upper class to the amerchants and even the common people. The culture of the ever-growing amerchants displayed great vitality and became the mainstream by surpassing the warrior culture. Respectively representing “the elegant” and “the popular”, the warrior culture and the Edo culture, struck a balance, merged with each other and enjoyed the mutual development in their conflict. The Edo culture had a balanced duality from both the exterior and the interior.

Abstract: The authors used yet another suffix stripper (YASS) to find out the base words or stems for one of the languages of north-east India called Mising Language. There are over 5, 00,000 speakers in Mising Language. The Roman scripts are used for Mising Language. Mising Agom Kébang is the highest body of the Mising people and is dedicated for the development of Mising literature. The particular suffix remover may be used without in depth knowledge about the language. The authors successfully used the YASS with a F-score of around 87% for finding the stem. In the field of information retrieval, the automatic removals of suffixes are very important. As the mising language does not have a known corpus, the authors created the corpus.

Abstract: One of the main concerns of current foreign language methodology is the effective grammar acquisition and the actual need for it. On other hand, the constant progress of mobile technology and the attractiveness of social media provide great opportunities for ubiquitous learning, which can complement the regular class work and motivate learners to practice and master the grammar contents in a foreign language. This study investigates the impact of the communicative approach on the learning traditions of Eastern countries, and concludes on the key role of technology in facilitating the development of grammar competence. The study interviewed more than 100 university students from 22 countries from Eastern Europe and Asia. Data show clear preference for the explicit learning and support the proposal for a mobile Application dedicated to the explication of grammar rules and to the interactive practice of different grammar contents in community through social media.
