The Effect of Task Complexity and Strategic Planning Time on Writing Accuracy: A Case Study of Undergraduate Students at AMU

Abstract: Tasked –Based Language Teaching has widely provided learners some opportunities to learn spoken and written language through learning activities in the major of English Language Teaching (ELT). A growing body of research on the effects of task complexity on written productions, the present study explored the impacts of task complexity and strategic planning time on ESL learners’ written performance in terms of accuracy. To this end, forty-five undergraduate English Language Learners, both male and female (within the age range of 17-25) have been recruited from Aligarh Muslim University. Two tasks were chosen as instruments for data collection. One is an argumentative essay and the other is a narrative task to measure the accuracy of the participants’ written production, under different planning conditions (pre-task planning, within-task planning, and no planning). One-way MANOVA was employed as the statistical means of analysis. The findings revealed a significant effect of task complexity under different planning conditions on Error-free clauses (the percentage of clauses that do not contain any errors) and correct verb forms (the percentage of accurately used verbs in terms of tense, aspect, modality, and subject-verb agreement) regarding accuracy.

Transformation or Socio-Cultural Identity: Style Shifting on Language Used in Tanzanian Film Industry (Bongo Movies)

Abstract: This paper seeks to demonstrate how there has been a manifestation of a style-shifting on the languages used in Tanzanian film industry (Bongo movies), from less to highly prestigious language; Kiswahili and English being the case. That, when people are highly negotiating for the use of Kiswahili in different domains, in Tanzanian film industry there is a style shifting from Kiswahili to English. This paper investigates whether code-switching and use of English titles and subtitles in the Bongo Movies is a product of language transformation or a way of constructing a new socio-cultural identity through relating to English usage, the language of authority and economic power, or is for attracting more audience or outside country market or whether it is the outcome of free economy, market and privatization or internationalization and globalization where English seems to be inevitable. The study was guided by Speech Accommodation Theory to clarify motivations for adjustment in speech patterns. Data for this study were collected through watching and reviewing 11 DVDs of Bongo movies produced after year 2000 to trace the status of language transformation, and interviewing 10 film stakeholders to examine the possible factors for style shifting on language used in Tanzania films. The data revealed that the use of English titles and subtitles, and code-switching from Kiswahili to English are the linguistic strategies for constructing socio-cultural identity, the manifestation of a multilingual Tanzania, film contextualization, free market economy particularly the need to attract and accommodate the international audience, co-production with outside companies, sponsors’ demands, and International Film Festival requirements.

Abstract: As a sign formation, text is fundamentally heterogeneous and heterostructural. Since the times of classical rhetoric, three layers have been identified in the text: the object layer, the logical layer, and the language layer. Each had relative independence, which enabled them to be the subject of analysis in a special section of the rhetorical canon. These layers were characterized by their own descriptive logic and ways of processing the material. Sense configuration could proceed in three directions under the influence of three molecular structures of the text: language, logic, theme. Hence, the possibility of three ways of understanding: literal, conceptual and paralogical. However, writing allowed dialogue with the text ("conversation with a book"), i.e. interacting with it as with a subject of communication and trying to understand the sense of the text as of the one which carries the sense of its self measure. The three ways of comprehension - the three semantic systems - must be coordinated, correlated to one another in order to appear as a semantic whole - the face of the text.

Abstract: The article introduces a new approach in linguoculturology based on the semantic analysis of the lexemes, which may become perspective in the studies of the triad: language – personality – national world view. The paper manifests the relevance of this approach, determines the aim – the research of the semantic structure of a lexeme, and the object – common neutral vocabulary (“face, hand, head, metro, dacha, bath-hous, cottedge”). The analysis of the word’s meaning sheds light on the differences between linguocultural and cross-cultural components of words. A set of methods are used: the method of the analysis of the vocabulary definitions, the contextual method and the component analysis of lexemes. The anticipated results provide an opportunity to understand and explain the world view in multisystem languages. This research has both theoretical and practical value.

Abstract: Currently, the world has grown deep concern of the issue of symbols. The symbol has become popular research direction and has made certain achievements in the interactive language issues - literature - culture, especially in folklore studies. In the course of research on sub-type miraculous fairy tales Vietnam, the author found that the world miraculous characters (WMC) in the dream appeared with frequency bearing dense and symbolic meaning. That is to say, the WMC is a symbol interesting. This dream of fairy tales characters is a mystical symbol, universal, all humanity. So, the "WMC in the dream" is a kind of "dream cage dream”, "symbol cage in the symbol" should be "decoded" in order to understand the intellection of art about people and the world that the folk authors expressed therein. The author would like to say about its deep influence on the development of WMC in the fanciful literature.
