Abstract: Introduction: The lack of diversity in the diets of women of reproductive age (WRA) is a public health problem in Senegal. The good nutritional status of women is one of the factors in the fight against maternal mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the state of dietary diversity among WRA in the Kolda region. Methods: The study was cross-sectional and descriptive and took place in January-February 2020 in the Kolda region. Data were collected at household level using a questionnaire administered after informed consent. Results: The mean age of the women was 27.62 years, with a standard deviation of 7.2 years. The median age was 27. Majority of women surveyed lived in rural areas (72.1%) and 58.5% were uneducated. The average dietary diversity score for WRA was 4.4, with a standard deviation of 1.7. Taking classification into account, 44% of WRA in the region had moderate dietary diversity, compared with 24.7% with low diversity and 31.3% with high diversity. Conclusion: In the fight against food insecurity and malnutrition, the synergy of actions from all sectors, such as health, agriculture, the economy and social development, is therefore essential for a good nutritional status of WRA.

Abstract: Introduction: Guinea experienced two pertussis epidemics in two health Regions of the country between 2022 and 2023. The first occurred in two health districts in the Labe region and the second in the Lola health district in Nzerekore. The aim of the study was to compare the two responses and determine the epidemiological, clinical, and evolutionary characteristics of pertussis cases in concerned children, and to identify the risk factors for the commencement of the disease. We conducted a descriptive and comparative cross-sectional study of the response to the two pertussis epidemics from 03 to 16 January 2023 in the prefectures of Lelouma and Mali and from 15 to 25 April 2023 in the prefecture of Lola. Our study population was children suspected of having pertussis living in these localities. Results: A total of 146 suspected cases of pertussis were recorded out of 5,831 inhabitants of the affected localities (the overall attack rate was 34 cases per 1,000 inhabitants), with one case of death. During the first epidemic, we recorded 83 cases of Pertussis cough in Linsan Saran and 13 cases in Dougountouny. The median age was 4 years and 54% were boys. The epidemic began on 21 November 2022 in Linsan Saran and cases then appeared intermittently until 20 January 2023. The second epidemic recorded 50 cases, of which 5 were confirmed and one death was reported in the village of Gbee. The epidemic began on 18 March 2023 and ended on 25 April 2023. The lessons learnt from the first epidemic enabled the health authorities to bring the second epidemic under control quickly, and to prevent any further outbreaks and prevent it from spreading to other localities in the health district. In terms of financial resources deployed to contain the two epidemics, out of a total of GNF 261,256,448, 62.78% was used for the second epidemic, compared with 37.22% for the first. Conclusion: Our study shows that during both epidemics, the disease affected children with a median age of 4 and 3 years respectively. The risk factors for the occurrence of pertussis were low vaccination coverage among children with the disease, a history of contact with cases and promiscuity. The two epidemics were studied using the surveillance system set up by the Ministry of Health and implemented by the health district management teams.

This study was carried out to assess the health problems of the elderly ad their health seeking behaviours. Materials and methods: This was cross-sectional descriptive study carried out amongst elderly persons aged 60 years and above in Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto state. Using a combination of multistage and systematic sampling methods, a total of 347 respondents were recruited into the study. A set of pretested questionnaire was used for data collection after obtaining ethical approval and informed consent from study subjects. Results: Less than half of the respondents (47.8%) had appropriate health seeking practices by visiting health facilities during spells of illness. The commonest illness experienced by the elderly in this community was musculoskeletal diseases followed by hypertension and visual problems. A total of 95.7% of the respondents were not covered with any form of health insurance scheme. Predictors of health seeking behavior included duration of illness more than ten years and belonging to upper socio-economic class. Abstract: Despite the MOH policies on the right to safe motherhood, right to access information and quality services by women throughout pregnancy, childbirth and post-natal period, accessibility and satisfaction with ANC services by pregnant mothers remain a challenge. Client satisfaction with antenatal care services affects accessibility to these services by pregnant women, which in turn affects the outcomes of pregnancy. Client’s concerns, suggestions, desires and expectations of health care services need to be seriously examined due to their potential influence on utilization of health services and satisfaction. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study which sought to determine antenatal clients’ satisfaction with antenatal care services among mothers attending antenatal clinic at Pumwani Maternity Hospital and N.C.C.K Huruma community clinic. The study targeted pregnant women aged between 18-49 years seeking antenatal services in both clinics. Simple random sampling technique was used to recruit the subjects. Fischer’s formula was applied to calculate a sample size of 265 antenatal mothers. Structured and semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data. Bivariate analysis of data was done using SPSS Version 21software; cross-tabulation was done to obtain association between variables and null hypothesis was tested using Chi-square. Clients portrayed high levels of overall satisfaction with services at 92.8% (60.6% satisfied and 32.2% very satisfied). However, some of the reasons given for dissatisfaction were long waiting time, poor health workers support and high cost of services. Satisfaction was influenced by the type of facility attended i.e. public or Faith-based and a significant association was observed between type of facility and satisfaction levels (p-value 0.000). Age and level of education had no association with antenatal clients’ satisfaction with services (p-value 0.254 and 0.292 respectively). Family income was not seen to influence satisfaction (p-value 0.503). Waiting time for services (p-value 0.000) and health worker support (p-value 0.000) played a significant role in clients’ satisfaction. There was a statistically significant difference in the level of antenatal clients’ satisfaction with services between Pumwani Maternity Hospital clinic and N.C.C.K Huruma clinic. As much as the overall satisfaction with services was high, there is need to address reasons for dissatisfaction with antenatal services in order to increase antenatal clinic attendance, improve pregnancy outcomes and reduce maternal mortality rates.

Abstract: Introduction: The Ministry of Health and Social Action recommends at least four antenatal care (ANC). This indicator is not sufficiently documented in Podor health district. This study aimed to identify factors associated with the completion of ANC in this district. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 19 to 22 June 2020 in Podor health district, located 490 km away from Dakar in northern Senegal. The study population included women who had given birth in the 24 months preceding the survey. A two-stage cluster sampling was carried out. Data were collected during a face-to-face interview using an electronic questionnaire created with Open Data Kit Collect (ODK Collect) software. The adjusted Odds ratio (aOR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI95%) were calculated. Results: A total of 832 women were interviewed. Their average age was 26.5 ± 6.6 years, and they were mainly uneducated (54.1%), married (96.2%), and from rural areas (72.8%). The study showed that 51.20% of women surveyed underwent at least four ANC. Married women (aOR= 4.14), those who walked to reach health facilities (aOR=1.69), and those who watched television at least once a week (aOR=1.66) were significantly more likely to undergo at least four ANC. Conclusion: We need to raise awareness among women of reproductive age and resource persons through the mass media, and improve the geographical accessibility of health facilities to increase ANC coverage.
