Abstract: The ranking of subjects is attracting more and more attention from the government, universities and society in China. As the most representative and credible subject evaluation in China, China University Subject Rankings (CUSR) has carried out four rounds since the first round in 2002. Its evaluation purpose, evaluation content, evaluation main body, evaluation indicators and the use of evaluation results have also been gradually developing, revising and adjusting, becoming more detailed, multi-dimensional and optimized. With the influence of the subject evaluation, the number of participating subjects, and social attention increasing, CUSR is faced with several practical problems of being alienated in the process of specific operation and application of results: the evaluation itself is regarded as the purpose; the nature of the evaluation is disputed; the appeal for the scientificity of the evaluation indicators is improved; and the evaluation result deviates from the original intention. In order to better meet the strategic needs of national development and the practical needs of university development, the optimization path of subject evaluation is to build Chinese characteristics and realize Sinification, continuously improve the scientificity and credibility, actively learn from international experience and expand international influence, so as to serve subject construction and development, and promote the overall improvement of the academic degrees and graduate education in China.

Abstract: Nowadays, the qualification examination of practicing doctors has been one of the important criteria for the selection of health talents in China, while teaching reform has always been the priority in the teaching work of colleges and universities. This paper discusses the significant measures of teaching reform in colleges and universities through its examination results. To explore the test strategies for both Chinese and oversea students from Hainan Medical University based on the status of the qualification examination of practicing doctors in The School of Dentistry. Through the National Medical Examination Center, we collected basic information, average scores and the success rates in various medical sections and different subjects tested in the qualification examinations for dental practitioners who graduated from Hainan Medical University in 2011-2016, which were compared with the national corresponding parts. From 2011 to 2016, the number of practicing doctors taking the dental exam nationwide increased, and accounted for 1.2% of the number of candidates nationally. In 2016, the comprehensive written test and total success rates of candidates at Hainan Medical University decreased by nearly 9% compared with the national average, with a statistically significant difference in the written test results (P<0.05). There were significant differences between the average scores of the clinical medicine section and the basic medical section compared with the national examination results in 2016 (P<0.01). According to the results of the examination focusing on different clinical disciplines, the average scores of the 16 courses in 2016 were lower than those of the corresponding parts for the candidates taking the national examination. The teaching reforms and test strategies were proposed based on the factors that affected the test scores. This paper puts forward the oral examination as the focus point for further teaching and emphasizes the need for further students' practical training.

Abstract: This work reports the results of a case study where traditional activities in an engineering/science classroom, such as demonstrations and self-paced activities, were compared with ‘writing across the curriculum” (WAC) activities. One group did writing-to-learn assignments and one group did our seminal construct ‘question-to-learn’ where they designed exam problems for their peers. A model is presented which describes the parameters that influence the exam score outcome. Some of these variables were carefully controlled during the project (labs, textbook, lecturer) and some other parameters were measured (lecture attendance, time-on-task and previous knowledge) in order to minimize data corruption due to confounding variables. The main parameter of interest, the ‘predictor’ of the exam score was the extra-curricular activity. A pre-test and a post-test were also conducted in order to establish the students relative gain. We also tested the hypothesis of using the quality of the students’ WAC outputs as a predictor of academic achievements. Data is analyzed both with parametric and non-parametric methods and results show that there was no significant difference between the groups on exam scores and that the relationship between WAC quality and exam scores is not significant. The main reason for the non-significant results is concluded to be due to low participation rates and too low “dosage”.

Abstract: The critical thinking trait is the premise and foundation of innovative thinking, and has become the necessary ability and core quality for cultivating innovative talents. Different scholars have different understandings about the definition and constituent elements of the characteristics of thinking and critical thinking. Their common view is that the characteristics of thinking is the intention and will of thinking activity, and the characteristics of critical thinking is the individual tendency of critical thinking. Facts have proved that the general lack of critical thinking ability of Chinese students has become a defect in their qualities. Thus, the education of critical thinking should start from primary education, and the cultivation of critical thinking at university stage should strengthen the existing foundation laid in primary and secondary schools. Faced with the educational growth process of these potential innovative talents of the Chinese students, this paper puts forward five countermeasures and suggestions on the cultivation of critical thinking characteristics, which have theoretical and practical significance for promoting the reform of critical thinking teaching, improving the level of critical thinking of the Chinese students, improving the qualities of cultivating innovative talents and promoting independent innovation.
