Abstract: The US is in greater need of STEM graduates to keep its competitive edge. Various US government agencies have raised concerns about shortage of STEM graduates for 35 years. It is equally important to keep US in technologically superior position. One way to grow the STEM workforce is to increase enrollment, retention, and graduation rates. It has been reported that incoming students are weak in Mathematics and thereby having great difficulty in engineering courses. As a result, they are dropping out of engineering programs resulting in low retention and graduation rates. It is desired to reinforce mathematical concepts. It is desired to engage, mentor and tutor them to keep them from dropping. There are three objectives in this project. One is to increase recruitment; the second goal is to improvement via engagement and providing help. The third goal of increasing graduation rates will be automatically achieved by enhancing retention rates. To meet this objective, Engineering Minority student Engagement Project (EM-STEP) is using an innovative five prong approach of offering Saturday Academy, peer lead group, professional lecture series, freshman seminar and summer research projects. Four high D, withdrawals, incomplete and F grade rates courses have been identified and they are Fundamentals of Electric Circuit Analysis, Engineering Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics, Introduction to Fluid Mechanics and Introduction to Thermodynamics. Students in these courses are from four engineering disciplines of Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering. These courses are being taught in the Saturday Academy and twenty students are working as peer group leaders. We are also offering motivating lectures in the professional lecture series. Summer research project for 8-week duration is also offered.

Abstract: The modern apprenticeship pilot work in China is a complex system, for it involves multiple stakeholders not only on numbers, but also in categories, with complicated relationship between them. The stakeholders have different interest appeals, resulting in different interest conflicts between them. By dividing the stakeholders into 3 categories of core, key and supporting levels, and ignoring the internal conflicts for the stakeholders in the same category, this paper is trying to find some guiding principles in dealing with the interest conflicts in the key and supporting levels for the stakeholders. Based on python analysis, the paper finds out that the stakeholders need to follow the guiding principle of “conforming to the government”, that is, the industry organizations shall conform to the government departments, so as to solve the conflicts of interest between the 2 at key levels; and also they should follow the guiding principle of “adapting to parents”, namely, the media and foreign researchers shall adapt to the parents, so as to solve the conflicts of the attitude and social benefits between the 3 at the supporting level. Only in this way may all the stakeholders at the key and supporting level take joint efforts in promoting modern apprentices’ training and cultivation.

Abstract: Faced with the institutional challenge posed by the instance of accreditation of a career in the Argentine university system, the pedagogical proposals formulated by the teaching teams take on special relevance. These explain how each teaching team intends to develop the curriculum in its methodological, content and evaluation aspects. For their part, higher-level educational institutions express, deploy, their Study Plans through the Chair Projects developed by the teaching teams. In this sense, they must develop actions aimed at training the members of their teaching teams in educational research, planning and evaluation. The Projects must also express all the missions of the university (teaching, research and extension) and constitute the basic agreement on which the academic activity revolves. The projects become a powerful tool to plan and control the adequacy of academic processes to the quality standards established by the accrediting agencies. For the students, the didactic proposals are constituted in the didactic contracts of each chair, to which they must adjust their tasks throughout the academic periods involved.

Abstract: In the context of economic globalization, higher education pays more and more attention to the cultivation of interdisciplinary talents. Changing the inappropriate part of traditional teaching methods has become a challenge that China’s higher education must handle to maintain its competitiveness in the new era. Covid-19 makes the combination of online and offline teaching become the norm, which will also raise higher requirements for undergraduates’ learning self-discipline. This paper analyses the learning habits of undergraduates in China’s higher education institutions. Compulsory courses account for a large proportion of the curriculum, and they are the learning tasks that must be completed during undergraduate stage, and their credits directly corresponding to the classroom learning time, which can indicate some learning situations of undergraduate. The statistical data were collected from a comprehensive university, and its training disciplines were divided into five cases. The average weekly fixed class workload of undergraduates was obtained through the credits of compulsory courses in each case for many grades. The reasons for the formation of undergraduates learning status and the influence of learning quality were interpreted by the combination of the survey data with the corresponding teachers’ comments. The weakness of active learning consciousness of China’s undergraduates is mainly related to the learning habits formed under long-term exam-oriented education. In addition, teachers’ sense of responsibility plays a core role in the learning outcomes of undergraduates. At present, the concern of China’s higher education is gradually shifting from teaching to learning, focusing on the cultivation of undergraduates’ interest in their majors and independent learning ability after class.

Abstract: In order to train a large number of outstanding teachers, Chinese government has implemented the policy of public-funded normal education. Government-sponsored normal university students can enjoy a total tuition waiver, living allowance and employment security. Under the social background of China's difficult employment for university students, employment security has set government-sponsored normal university students at ease, as they no longer need to compete in universities for future job opportunities. From the perspective of the first-second classroom linkage, this research, with normal university undergraduates majoring in special education in Guangdong Province, China, as the investigation sample, explores the development of academic achievements under same learning environment between government-sponsored and non-government-sponsored students, so as to dissect whether there is a correlation between the academic achievement of government-sponsored students and employment security? It is found that the government-sponsored students had globally higher academic achievements in the first classroom than non-government-sponsored students, but had lower academic achievements in the second classroom, showing the conflicts in the development of the two classrooms. According to the facts, it is shown that government-sponsored students have stronger professional identity that non-government-sponsored students, and are actively engaged in the learning of the first classroom. However, the former have weaker endogenous power than the later. Employment security affects the government-sponsored students' academic achievements in the second classroom.
